9-11/1/1999 Reports

Desk of the General Manager
11/1/1999

Pudding Earl,

The general stores that were under construction have been completed. I went to the liberty of cleaning Skyranger-1 of it's unneeded weapons, and loading on some additional grenades. I heard a grenade actually got used for once, and with the new stores I went to the liberty of ordering a bunch of replacements. Sounds like you're going to need them. I also went ahead and purchased some electro flares. I've overheard the recruits complaining about night missions. This should help morale at least.

The Pudding Earl,

Further talk among the operatives has been captured on tape. Once again I believe this to

be relevant to your interests. This interaction was recorded in the Hangar near Skyranger-1.

Hafner: Man, I can't believe Ed died.
Revenu: I know what you mean, of all the people had to be him.
Stoddard: Can't help but feel like it's irony. Surprising irony mind you.
H: Surprising irony? You didn't think he'd die?
S: Not to that. Thought the new guys would go down for sure.
Crossett: You've got a new guy standing right here y'know.
S: Sure do, and I'm amazed by it rookie.
C: We're the same rank Sergeant.
S: Sure are. But when you top the kill chart, then maybe I'll stop calling you rookie.
R: Ignore her sergeant. She's a bitch through and through.
C: Yes captain.
R: Good. We're getting side-tracked anyway.
S: How so, Captain?
R: I was pretty sure we were remembering Ed.
H: Sure were. Great guy Ed. He was so...caring.
R: Sure was. I'm gonna miss him.
S: Same.
H: Wait. You seriously have feelings?
S: Fuck you Hafner.
(laughter from Hafner and Revenu)
C: How can you laugh when one of your friends die?
S: We saw four men die on the first mission. There were eight of us out there. Odds were good seven
us would die on that last mission. But we only lost one. It's a shame Ed died, but fact is it could
have been worse, and we're not dead. That's reason enough to laugh to me.
C: So what, better him than us, is what you're saying.
S: That's exactly what I'm saying.
C: Seems kind of cold don't you think? Sure you're cut out for leadership there sergeant?
S: I sure as fuck ain't. But I'm cut out for kicking alien ass. How about you?
R: Can it. Both of you. You're both taking this the wrong way.
C: What the fuck captain? How is caring about people dying taking it the wrong way?
R: It's not. But people are gonna die. That's inevitable. Mourn the dead but be glad it wasn't you.
C: That's bullshit captain.
R: That's how it is. Have you met the founder yet?
C: Can't say I have.
R: Well, when you meet him, you'll understand. He looks at us the same way he looks at everything
else here. As a resource.
(Crossett storms out of the room)
S: Good going captain.
R: Shut up Stoddard.
(Stoddard laughs. Hafner and Revenu join in.)
H: Not even two weeks and we're jaded fuckers.
S: Speak for yourself. I was a jaded fucker when I walked in.
(The group laughs and starts to leave)

In light of this fight between the commanding officers, I would recommend a leadership training

course for the future.

Operation Insula Munitio

Dear Ambassador,

I have for you the reports from the Operation in England. I believe you will be pleased with the results that we have had. Due to  the time of the mission, I have not yet been able to compose the letter to the family  of the deceased, however Captain Emile Revenu has requested that he be allowed to write it. His request remains pending. If you have any input on the matter, I would be pleased to hear it.

Founder of X-Com,

5/1/1999 Reports

Desk of the General Manager
5/1/1999

Pudding Earl,

Six new recruits from the UN arrived today, as replacements for the first four who died. I am pleased to report that these new recruits look far more promising than yesterday's batch, with a minor exception. As per your orders the new recruits have all been assigned to the Skyranger-1.

On the matter of the Skyranger-1, there has been some issues in relation to it. Due to a book-keeping error it appears that some supplies were over-ordered, and in a confusion of orders some equipment was placed on the Skyranger. This would normally not be an issue, however with both things coinciding, we don't have the space in the stores to place the equipment back in the stores. All efforts to store them elsewhere have been refuted, as the laboratories insist on keeping anything un-related clear to help study. Likewise the living quarters are too full to house it, and for some reason the engineers insist the workshop needs to remain clean, despite no projects being ordered. On that note, I must inquire as to why we have engineers on the payroll at all. Regardless, the issue will be fixed soon enough, when the new stores are complete.

To, The Founder of X-Com

We have sent the personnel you requested on the 1/1/1999. We apologise for the delay, and any potential damage this wait has caused. As you know, we must ensure that all candidates are aware of the necessary secrecy of your division, and finding appropriate individuals is at times a problem.

The Pudding Earl,

We have made a break-through in laser technology. We have successfully managed to weapon-ise
a laser, creating a more dangerous weapon than the standard firearms we have at present. Sadly, we
do not believe it will be as efficient as the alien plasma weapons, however anything we can do to
lessen the alien advantage is a step in the right direction.

At present this weaponised laser is not suitable for field use, however it will only take
minor adjustments to be made ready. As per your instructions, we have split into two teams, and are
working on medi-kits, and understanding the alien power sources.

Notice of Interaction

Department of Psychology
3/1/1999

The Pudding Earl,

The following is a transcript of a discussion had by the current operatives. The exchange was captured on camera. No action recommended. Operatives currently unaware of surveillance.

Hafner: Hey (pauses) is anyone else thinking about what happened out there?
Stoddard: What are you talking about Hafner?
H: I mean, y'know, the mission. Half of us died out there.
Carr: Yeah, it's on my mind too.
H: Y'know, before yesterday I'd never shot someone before. Now I've got a confirmed kill, and seen four people die.
Revenu: Heh, a confirmed kill. You make it sound like it's a big deal.
H: Well, it is, isn't it? I mean, I'm responsible for something's life ending.
S: Bullshit you're responsible. Those fuckers came here. They landed on our planet. Of course we're gonna try and kill them. You ain't responsible for shit.
(The recruits sit in silence for a minute)
C: Hey, does that mean the aliens weren't responsible for the deaths of...the others?
R: Of course not, Evelyn said it perfectly. They came here. Everything that happens after is their responsibility, not ours.
S: Hey Revenu, we're a military organisation. Don't get fucking friendly. That's Stoddard to you. Or Squaddie.
R: Then it's Sergeant Revenu to you, Stoddard.
S: (sarcastically) Yes Sergeant
H: Hey Stoddard, why are you such a bitch?
(Laughter from Carr and Revenu)
S: Fuck you Hafner
H: That was a serious question. I mean, we're all in this together, why are you so hostile?
S: You really wanna know? Do you really want to hear what's going through my head?
C: I know I do.
R: Same.
S: Well. Fact is those people that died. They could be sitting here right now and we could be the ones being talked about. Only two things seperate us from them. Luck, and maybe some skill. So odds are really fucking good that at least one of us is going to die when we go out there again. Fuck, we're all gonna die if we don't get replenished. So that's why I'm a bitch. Cause I don't wanna feel jack shit when you die.
(A long pause follows)
R: Stoddard, I never knew you cared.
S: Fuck you Sergeant.
(Laughter from Carr, Hafner and Revenu)
C: I wanna get to know you guys. Even if you will probably die.
H: Whysat Ed?
C: Well I figure, the guys who died, I didn't know a lot about em. I talked to Astra once though, and she seemed nice. When I die, I'd like it if someone would remember me. Know me as a person, y'know? And I guess I wanna do the same for everyone else.
R: That's pretty profound Ed.
C: What can I say?
H: Nothing that wouldn't ruin it.
(Laughter from Carr, Hafner and Revenu. Stoddard chuckles a little)
H: Oh my god. She has a sense of humour.
S: I also have a sense of sticking my foot up your ass if you don't shut up about it.
(More laughter)
R: Alright. That's enough dicking around. We've got to get down to target practice. If I don't mention it no one else will.
C: Also the founder would probably kill you.
R: That too. Let's move out.
**END OF TRANSCRIPT**

I believe this should be brought to your attention, as I suspect it may be relevant to the future performance of operatives in the field, should they survive long enough.

Dear Wade Bradley,

It is with great regret that I must write to inform you that your wife, Evelyn Bradley, has been killed in the course of duty. The sympathies of both myself, and her squad mates are with you. Though I do not expect this to right the wrong that has been done to you, I hope that you will take some comfort in the knowledge that your wife's death was not in vain, and that her actions, and sacrifice, have made the world a safer place.

I also regret to inform you that, due to the nature of her work, Evelyn Bradley's corpse may not be released to the public.

Sincerely,

General Val Blackman

Dear Heribert and Theresia Unger

I write to you today to inform you of the tragic death of your son, Franz Unger. Franz died in service to both his country, and his planet. You have my sympathies, as well as those of his squad mates. If it offers any comfort, Franz Unger's actions in the operation proved vital to the success of his mission, and without his sacrifice it is likely others would have died. The world has been made a safer place by his actions.

I also regret to inform you that, due to the nature of his work, Franz Unger's corpse may not be released to the public.

Sincerely,

General Filibery Hofmeister

Dear Shura Samusenko

I am writing this letter to pass on the regretable news that your sister, Astra Samusenko, was killed in action. Astra Samusenko's death was an unavoidable tragedy, as she was slain by a foe beyond the squad's knowledge, while standing guard on the perimiter. Her death was avenged, as both the killer, and all other hostiles in the area were eradicated. She will be missed, both my me personally, and the soldiers she fought alongside with.

Regretably, due to the nature of her work, Astra Samusenko's corpse may not be released to the public.

Sincerely,

General of the Army Savely Mikhailov

Dear Aya Yoshida

I regret to inform you that one, Shuji Tanikawa, was killed in combat. I am writing to you as you were listed as his contact party. I can only assume that this news comes as a painful shock to you. Though I do not think such news will lighten your grief, I believe you should know the Shuji Tanikawa died to bring victory to our cause. Without his sacrifice many more lives could have been lost. You have the sympathies of both myself, and of his fellow soldiers.

Regretably, however, Shuji Tanikawa's corpse cannot be released to the public, due to the nature of his work.

Sincerely,

General Yuuki Inoue

Letter to the UN. 1/1/1999

Desk of the Founder
1/1/1999

Dear Ambassador,

As per our arrangement I am writing to you to inform you of the steps that have been undertaken by X-Com to handle this alien threat. We have set up a facility near the town of [REDACTED] in Italy. The facility has been given no official name, but recruits have taken to calling it "The Castle", and it seems to have caught on. So far efforts have been made to improve both the size of the facility, and the number of operatives currently within it. I will include for the UN's benefit a list of expenses. Due to the nature of our operation, I am loathe to include the price on such things. Just be aware that so far we have spent approximately $3,000,000 of the money that has been granted to us.

Expansions to the facility:
-Additional Living Quarters
-Additional Stores
-Large Satelite dish

Furthermore, we have hired the following additional staff.
-Four Recruits
-Fifteen Scientists.

Our existing Science team has been set to work on laser weaponry, in absence of alien technology to be investigated. This will obviously be changed when we have made contact.

I trust that this has answered your questions. I will write to you again at the beginning of next month.

Founder of X-Com,

Pudding Earl
